Getting To Know Sharmin

Sharmin Tiu-Curcio, OTR/L Hello, I want to introduce myself. My story isn’t filled with glitz and glamour like a Hollywood celebrity. Instead, it’s similar to countless other immigrants currently residing in the United States. When we think of the United States, we’ll likely imagine a land with opportunity, innovation, the American Dream, excess, and the like. Like many other children growing up overseas, I desired a better life, and the United States offered this. Okay, but how would I get there? Again, like so many other children growing up in another country, you can carve a path to the United States by entering the medical field. With healthcare in continual high demand, with my natural attachment to arts, crafts, and generally working with my hands creatively, studying occupational therapy seemed like a no-brainer. Most importantly, I yearned for a career that involved working directly with people. Instantly, I fell in love with my studies. In other words, that little girl’s imagination turned into a beautiful reality, and I’m thankful that she didn’t give up. I have been practicing for over 15 years now. Opening my own practice has been a dream. Helping people recover is rewarding. I have extensive training in multiple settings such as; pediatrics (both school based and outpatient), adult subacute rehab, and home care. I’m very passionate about helping people reach their highest potential.

A little bit about myself. I am happily married to an Italian/Irish/German who loves to cook. We both enjoy cooking. We love to watch cooking shows together and we try to recreate the recipes. Sometimes we modify the recipes. Some attempts are more successful than others.

Our beloved pets are our children. We both love animals very much. We have 3 Chihuahuas (Yoshi, Fuji, and Blobby), 1 cat (Bezerko), a guinea pig (Piglet), and a fish tank. Each pet (child) has their own story to tell.

I’m also very active. I love MMA. I practice Muay Thai and Jiujitsu in my spare time. Both my husband and I do this together. It’s good “couple’s therapy”. We get to release our stress. We also like to take our dogs hiking. There’s a place in PA we always go to, Ricketts Glenn – a state park with marvelous hiking trails with multiple waterfalls and a gorgeous lake. We try to take our dogs everywhere 🙂

If there’s one thing, which I’d like to say to the next generation of little immigrant boys and girls, I’ll say this: many may deem your dreams as unattainable, but you must keep in mind that it’s possible.
